For me reason to compile my notes and experiences of 10+ years into a course I used to give in Kenya and now share it online. Practical Project Management - full course

The subjects in the presentation cover the role of the project manager the different basic models of project management cycle that I have come across and.. something which I call 'the three principles of project management'. OK, I'll give it away now.. To me these are: I. planning, II. communication and III. risk management. Enjoy & good luck.

KM4DEV is a community with momentum

- notes on the 2011 annual meetup -

Knowledge management, KM, is still a subject of much debate. Some believe its days of glamour are over. However, looking at the sheer numbers of new KM4DEV community members of over 2,000 now compared to a few hundred early 2010, it has momentum! KM4DEV stands for knowledge management for development. People from a wide range of development organisations have formed the community in 1995 (then bellanet), on a voluntary basis. Some 70 members attended the this year's annual meetup in Rome.

Storytelling and sense-making

The day was filled with social, icebreaker and networking event and 'open spaces'. For me it meant, that I was able to get to personally know no less than 17 people. One, of them, Charles Dhewa, spoke during the preceding event held at IFAD: Share Fair 2011 on 'sense-making through narratives'. He turned out to be a colleague at SNV Netherlands Development Organisation, based in Harare, Zimbabwe. Don't we all find an appealing story, humanised and real, more attractive to hear or read than a lenghty report? An interesting and related read: "Making sense of sensemaking narratives" :-)

What can KM4DEV learn from TED?

During various open space sessions I couldn't help to bring forward several times that I believe that theKM4Dev team can learn from the best practices of TED. Some examples: why not hold TED-like presentations (Making presentations in the TED style) at get-together but also in smaller working groups and even remotely through e.g. webinars. Another: the TED community. Online discussions are started by one individual, and are open to responses for a set time period. It keeps things fresh and sharp.

Words

A single words can be powerful. Paul Corney of Spark Now pointed out to me that even whole stories can be summarised in one word. The word mentioned at the Rome session that stuck with me most is 'confusiasm': a combi of confusion and enthusiam. Isn't confusion the driver for innovation, and a basis for learning by curiosity (and frustration of not comprehending)? I'm confusing myself here. KM is a subject of much debate; its definitions, its added value and positioning in organisations. Talking, thinking, designing and debating about this for a whole day brought an immense surge of enthusiamin me, or maybe.. confusiasm.

The added value of the KM4DEV community

What I feel that binds this community is a belief that knowledge collection, sharing and application is at the core of fighting (the good fight) against global challenges. The members join to learn, network and have fun, and at the same time discuss the KM challenges in their organisations: e.g. is a KM strategy relevant to develop? Should a KM manager fulfill the role explicitly (often without much mandate) or should it be integrated and entangled to have more effectivity? An interesting sum-up on the community's added value includes human, social, etc. etc. and something defined as ' energy' (read here). Confusiasmergy..

'Can SharePoint fight poverty?'

Sharepoint: a popular content management system specialised in online document management and collaboration and a system in use at SNV Netherlands Development Organisation. In this session I took an open minded look into what the role of Sharepoint could be in fulfilling SNV's mission in poverty alleviation across the world (ok, in 36 countries..).

The session took place during the ' Sharepoint Connections 2010' event in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. It was aimed at taking the (mostly) technical audience along in an out of the box brainstorm. Slides are shared via SlideShare, see below.

So can it? The main conclusion from the brainstorm was related to one of the slides: the Base of the Pyramid. Or to use the Wikipedia definition: Bottom of the Pyramid. Imagine the rich and wealthy at the top of the pyramid and the middle class (a very thin layer too in most developing nations) below and at the bottom the majority of people, the people living in poverty. Someone put it in this terms: "Sharepoint is a solution for the tip of the pyramid; it's licensing model, size and bandwidth requirements all indicate that." TED talks - SNV selection: international cooperation

= TED. A movement you could say. Here I'd like to share my selection a screening session at SNV Head Office in The Hague.

1. I known Mark Kamau from Nairobits in Kenya - an initiative of Butterfly Works. An open, honest and very smart talk on 'Intelligent engagement'.

2. Non-profits and Cola Cola -does it make sense to name these two in one sentence? Well, this talk proves it does make sense. And is it about the core of TED: ideas worth spreading.

3. One-of-a-kind innovator and speaker, Hans Rosling, has presented various times at TED as well as for BBC. Want to take it further and try using his software 'Gapminder' for yourself. I particularly like the part where he visualises the qulity of living using the income sliders.

4. A powerful talk about the current knowledge on hunger, labelled in this talk as 'a burden of knowledge' and some promising examples. Picked it for its story-well-told factor and important message. Where there is will..

5. Brave, simply brave. Oh, and smart. Did she use notes at all?

6. Impressive. Again a great story told. The key to TED talks.

The site is called Infosthetics 'Form Follows Data'. The image here is from a tool called Wordle. You can create your own Wordle, e.g. enter the url of your blog like I did here.

Zusje is Dutch and means Sister. Zusjezusje.nl is a photo blog with fascinating images of the two sisters and home and around the house. A great site to find inspiration for new compositions at home. Nominated Shot

When you get up early and wander the streets, there might be no breeze, the light is crisp and all you need to do is make the composition. This shot was nominated with the last 30 in the Dutch National Geographic Photography Contest in 2007. The building is Winkel van Sinkel on the Oude Gracht in Utrecht. The image was exhibited in Pakhuis de Zwijger in Amsterdam.
