De foto hierboven is gemaakt door het USGS Bee Inventory and Monitoring Lab in Beltsville, Maryland, USA. De foto's worden met een publieke licentie gedeeld via Flickr en Instagram. Sam Droege (see his video profile by National Geographic) leidt het team van onderzoekers en fotografen. Hij noemt zijn foto's bee 'wedding photography': hoge kwaliteit met ruimte voor spontaniteit.

De coolste Nederlandse bijen

Zijn er tussen de 5000+ foto's ook soorten die in Nederland voorkomen? Er zijn tenslotte zo'n 360 bijensoorten in Nederland. Dat zijn er maar een handvol. Dat was reden om samen met collega's van Naturalis Biodiversity Center en EIS Kenniscentrum Insecten een lijst te maken van de mooiste en meest diverse selectie van bijen die in Nederland voorkomen. Ze waren allemaal te vinden in de collectie van Naturalis en zijn opgestuurd naar Sam Droege en zijn team. Zij maken de foto's en publiceren ze online.
